GUITARS FOR NICARAGUA
Supporting Sustainable Livelihood in Jalapa, Nicaragua

©2009 Armstrong Films, LLC
(26 minutes)

Chronic underemployment and unemployment are the hallmarks of an economy affected by neo-liberalism, and many workers in Central America countries have experienced these conditions since the signing of the free-trade agreements of the 1990s. In 2007 Lois Hickman, world-reknown occupational therapist and founder of the Boulder, Colorado, nonprofit organization ACT with Genius (now Animals and People Together), sought to make improvements to this situation. Ms. Hickman brought together master luthiers from Italy and Colorado, and six Nicaraguan guitarists. The luthiers taught the techniques of making fine guitars, and the musicians built their own guitars and established a guitar-making cooperative as a basis for their local business.

See what solidarity with the people of Nicaragua, appropriate technology, and right livelihood look like in action.

A 6-minute version of this film was shown at the music and film event ...mmmmmBOULDER! , April 30, 2011.
